(Color And It's Effect On Us In Our Environment)
Color is a powerful tool. It has a biological and a psychological effect on mood, energy, pain perception, hot and cold, appetite, buying decisions and even IQ scores. The biological reactions to color are standard among us, but the psychological reactions are personal.

In the residential and business environment, colors and the space plan make a statement about who you are. Would you like to be perceived as warm and inviting or cold and confusing? In the business environment the colors in the entryway, reception area or front office can communicate your trustworthiness. What does yours say about you?
Twenty percent of color that comes into the eye is sent to the hormonal system and it will have a predictable biological effect. The biological effect is a natural response reaction in living beings. The color receptors in the skin allow us to feel the effect of color whether we see it or not. Tests have been
done with blind persons, and their reactions have been similar to those of us who have our vision. This reaction is called a “biological default”. Just being in the presence of color has an influence.
Whether we like, hate or love the color, the reaction remains constant.
A biological color reaction example can be seen in nature with yellow and black as always signaling danger. For humans, it means, “I bite, I sting, I am poisonous, I am dangerous, don’t mess with me”. The recoiling from the signal occurs instinctively. |
When we reach the age of six, we have started to have reactions to color that are influenced by emotional associations. Events in our lives begin to alter our perception and enjoyment of a specific color. This is when the psychological reaction overrides the “biological default”. It is the psychological effects that make color so incredibly personal. Each of us has colors that soothe and |
uplift us and colors that revolt us. As we age, grow, mature and experience life, these preferences will change.
If you’re planning to paint, remodel, purchase new furniture or do anything in your home or office that will need color, take the time to think about the emotion you want to evoke in you and your guests. Then choose the colors that will do that for you. Remember, your overall color scheme in a room will speak volumes to you and your guests in either a warm or cold way. |
