"I had 5 weeks to remodel.  One week for breakdown, 3 to decorate and 1 to put everything back into my salon.  She took charge while I was out of town for 17 days of the remodel.  When I returned, everything was done, in order, and beautiful."

Tips- June 2007
(Do I need an Interior Designer or Interior Decorator?)

More often than not, when I am being introduced I am referred to as an Interior Decorator, even though I am an Interior Designer. I discovered that this was happening because most people think of the two as the same, so they use the titles interchangeably. With this

confusion it makes it difficult for most people to understand the value of each one.  It is my intention to help clarify this difference.
An Interior Decorator uses decorating principles only,to beautify a space. The Interior Designer can do this in addition to coordinating design projects with a holistic approach in spatial design. This includes designing the interior architecture, which includes anything to do with the structural

design of a room in addition to beautifying the space. A major difference between a designer and decorator is the role each can play in a remodel.  A designer can be there from the concept, draft the plans, choose the color palette, all the materials, and meet with the contractors or subcontractors regarding the design as work on the project progresses.  A decorator’s role would be minimal in this situation because they are not educated or trained on what is needed for a remodel.   (Please see photo)
The educational and licensing requirements for a decorator are non-existent.  An Interior Designer must meet both education and licensing requirements of the jurisdiction in which business is conducted to use the title Certified Interior Designer.  In addition, the designer must be well versed and have technical knowledge of the building and safety codes that can affect changes to interior spaces.
Interior Designers can specialize in residential or commercial design.  Some develop niche markets such assisted living facilities, health care and institutional design.  There are additional certifications required for certain design disciplines.
A successful Interior Designer must be able to (1) determine the needs of the client and the resources the client has available for the project, (2) establish the primary purpose and function of the space to be designed and (3) effectively execute changes to the structure, architecture and aesthetics of the interior to determine the mood and appeal of the space for the client.
So with this new found knowledge what will it be for you…a decorator or designer?
