Tips On Designing A Small Kitchen
June 2008

Today’s kitchen serves as our inner sanctum and our social hub.  It’ usually the place where we grab our first cup of coffee, open the mail and pay the bills.  We use it to huddle with our kids to help them with their homework.  And… when you throw a party, isn’t it the place where everyone gathers?  Oh yes, and don’t forget about cooking.

In the past an efficient kitchen was designed around a work triangle, formed by the location of the refrigerator, sink, and range.  The distance between these major appliances is still a consideration,

although the focus is shifting to work zones.  These zones include a center for food preparation, baking, eating, office work, and even hobbies.  Because of these specialized areas, the kitchen has become more industrious and personalized than ever.  The challenge for most of us is the available floor space has stayed the same, making it difficult to meet these growing demands.

Sensible space planning and creative design choices make it possible to maximize the potential of the kitchen, regardless of its size.  Following are a few ideas that will help you create a personalized kitchen that really sizzles.

  • Keep the wall color and cabinetry the same.  It makes a small kitchen feel substantially larger.
  • Keep the monochromatic kitchen interesting by introducing pattern, subtle changes in tones, or texture in the backsplash.
  • To continue the monochromatic space expanding principles, choose hardware that blends harmoniously with the finish on the cabinetry.
  • Forgo traditional hardware altogether by choosing cabinetry with a concealed grip at the base of cabinet doors.  This generates a smooth transition between cabinets and minimizes visual interruptions, causing the kitchen to appear larger.
  • If budget allows, select cabinetry that reaches to the ceiling.  This storage space can be used for seasonal and infrequently used items.

There are many more ideas that can be used to remodel a kitchen.  Be sure to use your dollars wisely and definitely consider using a professional designer to help you make the right choices that suit your lifestyle.

Happy remodeling!
