Why Should You Use Color on Your Walls?
April 2008

Close your eyes and imagine walking into a room with white walls.  There’s no furniture or any color anywhere.  How do you feel?  I feel neutral.  I’m not feeling happy or sad or any other emotion because the walls are colorless
and color evokes emotion.  Color on walls makes the visitor of the room feel the room is cared for and there was an attempt to make it warm, cozy and inviting. My newsletter in August 2007, “The Meaning of Color and Its Effect on Us
in Our Environment”, is a great one to read if you missed it.  It will give you the meanings of some colors and how they affect us.  I suggest you read it first before you paint, wallpaper, faux finish or do anything to your walls.

When I speak of color on the walls I am referring to paint, wallpaper, faux finishing or using fabric to bring an expression into the room.  If your walls could speak to you what would they say?  Would it be... "help, I need to change because I need to bring color to your room to match your décor."  Let me take a moment to talk about getting color to make the rooms in your house become more beautiful.

Let’s suppose you want a room uplift, but you want to spend very little to get it.  Changing the paint color on your walls is the least expensive way to do it.  How you choose the color is as simple as looking at your existing fabrics in your room.  Pick your favorite fabric and put it on a neutral surface or on the back of a chair.  What colors jump out at you?  These are the dominant colors in the fabric.

If there are two colors, choose your favorite depending on the mood you want to create for that room.  If you are going to paint the room, and you want an airy feeling, then a light color in the fabric is your best choice.  If you want a cozy, intimate nest, use one of the darker colors that you like in the fabric.  No matter what your choice, always get at least four paint swatches to put on each wall so that you can see them at all times of the day.  Sometimes colors can be one color during the day and another at night, so I strongly suggest that after you have made a decision about a color you buy a quart of the paint and put the color on each of the room’s four walls.  If you have more than one choice try all of them on the walls before you paint.  You’ll be happy you did.
