Tips- September 2007
(Color Trends 2008)
The Color Marketing Group (CMG) is the guru of the color design industry who directs the color trends each year. Benjamin Moore uses them as their guide for their color forecast, called “Pulse”, which is published for the Design industry. “Pulse 2008” is entitled Space. The information used in this newsletter has been taken from this publication.
The color trends emerge out of four important elements of Space: Elemental Space, Gravitational Space, Inner Space and Infinite Space. The overall theme is to unify Space which seems to have no boundaries.

Elemental Space reflects the “Green” environment of recycling, replenishing the Earth’s structure. The colors are rich, flowing, natural, deep and grounded. The colors are found in our natural environment. The colors can be seen reflecting off recycled cans, tires, newspapers. The colors of the Fall season as seen in nature are a good representation of the elemental Space colors. The colors represent our geosphere, our etiquette for the Earth by being considerate, respectful, mindful, and sustainable in all there is in our environment.
Gravitational Space and floating in Space can be used interchangeably. The colors used are light and luminous, creating a dreamy effect that can be surreal. You can see this in Lucite and glass used in furniture and accessories. The pastels and pearlescent metallic impart the feeling of dimension, illusion, being weightless, floating and defying gravity. |
Inner Space takes us deep down into the core of the earth to the depths of the sea. Rich and deep are the colors from sparkling to vibrant. The earth’s core brings us minerals, metallics and smoked silver. There’s even a smoked-blackened influenced color. I used to call it charcoal. Of course this one is fitting for the times. It’s called Deep Space. Inner space colors, think of coral, hidden gems, excavation, and beautifully toxic. |

Infinite Space stretches far beyond time and into domains that are mysterious, galactic, and boundless. When we delve into new “territories”, we perceive the mysterious as unknown and dark. Hence, we have the driving force for the blackening influence of the color palette for Infinite Space. In this palette, white light emerges and creates contrasts with the darkness. The positive and negative effects of these contrasts offer limitless choices for designers. The colors of this palette dark and light rouse the feeling of mystery, boundless, and intrigue. |
